Magadh Samrat Ajaatshatru, defeated and wounded, takes shelter with a woman named Amrapali, and they fall in love. He then plots with Senapati Balbadhra Singh to conquer Vaishali. However, when Vaishali Samrat discovers their affair, he sentences Amrapali to death. Enraged, Ajaatshatru attacks Vaishali, killing nearly everyone. He rescues Amrapali from the dungeons, but finds that she has changed and is not thrilled to be with him.
