Balto and his sled dog companions feel overshadowed by airplane delivery, but a plane crash on a mountain side gives them a chance to prove their worth. The story also highlights Balto's son Kodi, who was introduced in Balto II: Wolf Quest.

As the war ends, Balto and his pack of sled dogs must navigate a changing world where airplanes are replacing them as the primary means of mail delivery in the Arctic, forcing them to redefine their role and find a new sense of purpose.
