In the spring of 1936, Marco and Luis help aristocratic Russian Norma, who had a car accident, and Marco falls in love with her. As the Spanish Civil War begins, Marco leads peasants to defend Castelmare and becomes a rebel army lieutenant. Basil and Norma are forced to spy for Andre Gallinet, and Marco kills Basil after suspecting him.
