In the early 1990s, struggling biographer Lee Israel's writing career is in shambles due to her unpopular subject choices and personal unpopularity. To make ends meet, she starts creating and selling fake personal documents of deceased celebrities, teaming up with her friend Jack Hock. As their fraudulent business flourishes, Lee's moral compass begins to waver, even as she befriends a bookstore owner who genuinely likes her.
