A drifter named Nat Banyon sets out to reach Wyoming to start an ostrich farm, but his journey takes an unexpected turn when he steals a car and saves a man's life. He's arrested, but the man, Herman Finch, offers him a deal: paint his hotel in exchange for a car and a place to stay. As Nat becomes obsessed with Finch's wife, Iris, he discovers Finch's corrupt dealings and hatches a plan with a car dealer and his partner to steal from the local casino. But things take a deadly turn when a local and a policeman connected to Finch's shady business are found dead, and Nat must decide whether to leave or stay and take advantage of the situation.
