A substitute teacher, Wilson Walmsley, is hired at a suburban high school after personal trauma. He's disillusioned with the school's lack of authority and the teachers' indifference. He forms bonds with the arts teacher Louise and a bright, abused student named Joey. After intervening in a sexual assault, Walmsley and Louise are sued, and later, Louise is attacked by Joey's girlfriend. Feeling overwhelmed, Walmsley kidnaps Joey and six troublemakers, taking them to his isolated real estate in Alpine, Texas. The students wake up naked and caged, with electric fences, and Walmsley begins his unorthodox teaching method, emphasizing discipline and punishment.
