In the midst of war-torn Hungary, Soviet soldiers seize young women of German descent from a small village and imprison them in a labor camp, where they face brutal conditions in the coal mines. Amidst the turmoil, Irén befriends Rajmund, who teaches her the skills to survive. As Irén strives to return to her daughter and family, fate has other plans, and she finds herself falling in love with Rajmund.
