Asa Gemmill, a 30-year-old Torontonian, is a fan of 1930s and 1940s movie musicals and Canadian films starring Mar Stoddart and Doreen Gaynor. He lives an irresponsible life in the Winchester Hotel, where Stoddart once performed, and tries to bed the hotel club's aspiring Doreen Gaynors. His ex-wife Charity threatens to cut off his access to their infant son unless he gets his act together.
