Gene Autry must bring in an oil well despite Wilkins' attempts to thwart him. After a payroll robbery fails, Wilkins deceives the investors by claiming the well is dry. However, Gene is convinced that oil is present and decides to use dynamite to bring it in, with everyone on his tail.

Gene's initial allegiance to the cattle farmers is tested when he discovers that oil drilling will enable a vital railroad connection to the town.
