A socially awkward garbage collector named Simon befriends a charming but untalented novelist named Henry, who introduces him to a world of literature. Inspired, Simon begins writing what he believes is the "great American poem", and his work gains widespread acclaim, even earning him a Nobel Prize. Meanwhile, Henry's life spirals out of control, and he becomes a fugitive, forcing him to turn to Simon for help in fleeing the country.
