Sonny McGann, a convict, becomes so invested in producing a prison show featuring an all-convict cast that he hesitates to be paroled, ultimately becoming a free man against his will. He later returns to prison, breaking his pardon to recapture an escaped convict he had chosen to star in the show. Additionally, he discovers a talented tenor, Cliff Bailey, on the outside, who lands a Broadway contract after his performance in the prison show.
