Captain Alan King, a Sandhurst-trained officer, survives an attack on his escort thanks to Ahmed, a native Afridi deserter. Despite his skills in Pashtun, King faces prejudice from his fellow officers due to his mixed heritage. However, Brigadier General Maitland, who believes in equality among whites, sees potential in King and tasks him with training native cavalry. King also catches the eye of the general's daughter, Susan, who falls in love with him.
