In a peaceful winter in Czechoslovakia, a young girl named Vera receives her first ice skates from her godfather, Jaroslav. She quickly becomes a skating sensation and wins the national championship, earning an invitation to perform at the Lake Placid Carnival in the United States. Despite offers from showmen, Vera decides to abandon her career and return to her homeland after learning of Germany's invasion. However, she becomes stranded in the US and seeks help from her uncle, Carl Cermack, who owns a sumptuous Long Island home.
