Aimless Frenchman Edouard Binet travels from North Africa to Belgium, where he meets Sylvie Baron and introduces her to wealthy Egyptian Nemrod Lobetoum, who is carrying valuable jewelry. As Sylvie and Nemrod's friendship blossoms into love, Edouard becomes jealous. Later, Edouard arrives at a rooming house owned by Sylvie's mother, covered in blood, after Nemrod is killed on a train.
