In 1930s Italy, a charming Jewish waiter-turned-bookseller, Guido, starts a blissful life by wooing and marrying a beautiful teacher, Dora. They have a son, Joshua, and live happily until the forced deportation of the Jewish population. Despite not being required to leave, Dora volunteers to depart with her family, and they're sent to a concentration camp. Guido, desperate to keep his family safe and his son alive, creates an illusion that the Holocaust is a game, with the ultimate prize being a tank.
