A wealthy American couple, Noel and Meg, have a 26-year-old daughter, Clara, who was mentally disabled after a childhood head injury, equivalent to a 10-year-old's mental capacity. During an Italian vacation, Clara meets 23-year-old Fabrizio, who falls for her and is accepted by Clara. Meg initially resists Fabrizio's attempts to join their lives, but eventually believes a marriage between them could provide Clara with a normal life, without disclosing her disability to the Naccarellis. This causes tension with her husband, Noel, who wants Clara in an institution.
