In early-1880s New York City, the widow of Captain Errol and her young son Cedric struggle to survive. The Earl of Dorincourt sends his solicitor to bring Cedric to England to prepare him for his future title of Lord Fauntleroy. Upon arrival, Cedric charms the earl and his guests with his innocence and wit, while his mother is forced to live outside the castle. However, a woman claims her son is the rightful heir to the title, leading to a scandal that threatens Cedric's claim.
