Sarah Mathews, a widowed mother, and her high school senior daughter Zora are intellectuals who embrace their African roots. Sarah owns a store called African Queen and wants Zora to attend Berkeley, not her first choice of M.I.T. However, Zora's life is turned upside down when Sarah reveals that her biological father is not Charlie, who died before Zora was born, but a Caucasian man named Hal Jackson, a local car salesman. Zora is horrified and decides to find out more about Hal, learning that he is boorish, loutish, and not the kind of father she envisioned.
