Monte Norris, a small-time crook, is determined to rise to the top of the underworld. With a plan to rob a large department store, he finds a key to the cashier's office and sets out to pull off the heist alone. However, he boasts of his plans to four other hoodlums, who join in on the robbery. Despite taking $500,000, the group struggles to spend the money due to the marked bills. As tensions rise, the group turns on each other, leading to multiple deaths. In the end, Norris is left alone and seeks out his former girlfriend, Ronnie LaVerne, a nightclub singer who was framed by Norris and served a prison term.
