Two seasoned cowhands, Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins, roam the range, taking on various ranch tasks, but always preferring to do so from horseback. Their lives are a balance of months on the open range and occasional trips into town. Monte has a long-standing relationship with a prostitute, while Chet has fallen for the widow who runs the local hardware store. The cowboys' days are filled with camaraderie and competition, until one of their own, Shorty Austin, loses his job and turns to rustling and killing. This sets Monte and Chet on a new path, forever changing their lives on the range.
