A single father takes his 8-year-old son to work at a railroad drawbridge, where he's the bridge tender. A day earlier, the boy meets a woman struggling with addiction on a train. When a ship arrives, the father leaves his son alone at the lake's edge, and a train unexpectedly shows up. The son tries to warn his father, but he's too late. The boy falls into the gears and is crushed as the bridge lowers, and the people on the train are unaware of the tragedy. The story concludes with the father, now alone, meeting the woman, who has overcome her addiction and is holding a baby.
