Bigger Thomas, an African American, works for a wealthy white family, supplementing his mother's income. As their chauffeur, he's tasked with driving Mary, the daughter, to university. However, she decides to pick up her Socialist boyfriend, Jan, and they spend the day drinking and partying. When Mary becomes intoxicated, Bigger must get her to her bedroom undetected, but panics when her mother enters and accidentally kills her.
