Born and raised in Burbank, California, Hicks developed a strong athletic background, excelling in multiple sports at school and earning a scholarship to Loyola University, where he played both football and rugby. He was also the heavyweight boxing champion of the institution.
Hicks' athletic prowess extended beyond the university, as he went on to win another heavyweight boxing title in the U.S. Navy in 1946. He even had a brief career as a professional fighter, competing under the alias "Chuck Daley" before a hand injury forced him to retire.
