Nancy Fleming, a wealthy heiress, must marry a "plain American" to inherit her father's fortune, as he feared a foreigner would steal her heart and wealth. She hires Tony Anthony, a WPA worker, to pretend to marry and then divorce her. The two engage in a cross-country chase to reach Reno's divorce court, neither wanting to be the second to file for divorce.
