Stephen Forbes, a renowned prosecutor, quits his job after a wrongful conviction and opens a small law firm with his secretary Joan Reed. He gains a new partner, J.B. Roscoe, who connects him to city hall and the underworld. Forbes' brother John joins the firm and falls in love with Celia, who helps him win his first case. However, John discovers the firm's corrupt dealings and tries to distance himself from Roscoe. He's later framed for murder and sentenced to death row.
