A 12-year-old English boy named Hugh is sent to live with the Andrews family in Ohio due to the war. He quickly wins over the 11-year-old son Don and his friends at school. However, tensions rise when Hugh's intellectual prowess impresses Don's father and becomes a hit with the girls, making Don feel replaced and leading him to contemplate running away.
