In a repressive Afghanistan, a family of three women, spanning three generations, faces immense hardship under the Taliban regime. With no male relatives left after various wars, the mother and grandmother make a desperate decision to have their preteen daughter disguise herself as a boy to secure a job and support the family. The daughter, despite her fears of being discovered and killed, agrees to the ruse. As she navigates her new identity, she finds solace in a small act of defiance, planting a lock of her cut hair in a pot. The only ones aware of the deception are the milk vendor, a friend of her deceased father, and a local boy named Espandi, who recognizes her despite her changed appearance. Espandi renames her Osama, and the family's situation becomes even more precarious when the Taliban recruit local boys for military training.
