Devdhar, an orphan, is adopted by his uncle and aunt, who work for Bade Thakur and his family. After years of education in Bombay, Devdhar returns home to attend Radha's wedding. He falls in love with Manorama, Bade Thakur's niece, but is heartbroken when she marries Kunwar Narendra Pratap Singh. Devdhar discovers that Narendra has passed away, leaving Manorama to live as a Hindu widow, subject to strict rules and social isolation.
