In a small town during wartime, Ben Barton, a veteran and grocery store owner, struggles with rationing and the town's postmistress, Iris Tuttle, who heads the rationing board. Their complicated past, including a past engagement, resurfaces when Ben's son and Iris' daughter fall in love. Ben decides to sell half of his store to Cash Riddle, but unaware of Cash's involvement with black marketers, which threatens Ben's business and his relationship with Iris.
