Steve Moore, a 16-year-old boy, lives with his abusive stepfather, his mother, and younger sister in Bakersfield, California. When his mother prioritizes her relationship with the abusive stepfather over her son's well-being, Steve is forced to fend for himself and find a new home. He ends up at a shelter for runaways, where he meets other teenagers struggling to navigate their own difficult situations. With the help of a counselor, Steve learns to take control of his life and finds a new sense of purpose through his relationships with his friends and a new job.
