A middle-aged widower, Suryakant Jagdale, loses his job and saves the life of a young woman, Nishi Surve, who was abandoned by her in-laws. He discovers her singing talent and encourages her to pursue it, but their relationship is met with disapproval from the villagers. Despite this, they leave their village and move to Mumbai, where Nishi's career takes off with the help of a budding composer, Ravi Desai.
