Jenny Bunn, a young and beautiful Northern woman, moves to a London suburb to start her teaching job. She rents a room in a lodging-house with a middle-aged couple, Dick and Martha Thompson, and their French lodger, Anna. She soon meets Patrick Standish, who is immediately attracted to her, and they go on a date to a pseudo-Italianate restaurant. Despite being impressed, Jenny remains a virgin until marriage. Patrick tries to seduce her, but she rebuffs him, leading to a series of events where he attempts to win her over. However, when Jenny realizes she's unable to comply with his ultimatum, they part ways.
