Liesel Meminger, a young girl, loses her brother on a train ride in 1938. She picks up a book, "The Gravediggers Handbook", and is taken in by a foster family. Her foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann, are kind and caring. Liesel learns to read with Hans' help and becomes an avid reader. She befriends Rudy Steiner and Max Vandenburg, a Jewish refugee, and gets involved in hiding him from the Nazis.
