Andrew Briggman, a skilled soldier, joins the US troops in Afghanistan. After his incompetent sergeant is killed, seasoned veteran sergeant Deeks takes charge, transforming them into a formidable team. Deeks earns respect, fear, and popularity, but also manipulates ambitious soldiers, including Andrew, who wins a promotion but at a great cost. Despite the brutal war, Andrew holds onto his conscience, which is seen as a weakness, leading to his reassignment as a tank commander. As his comrades engage in illegal activities, including harming innocent villagers, Andrew struggles with his moral compass and decides to confide in his father about his concerns, but may have been overheard.
