In a late 19th century textile factory, a former teacher turned labor activist fights to improve the harsh working conditions and mistreatment of workers, exposing the dark realities of industrial labor.

The film chronicles the struggles of underpaid and overworked textile factory laborers in early 20th-century Turin, Italy, as they embark on a fight for improved working conditions. A professor, Marcello Mastroianni, is dispatched by the Socialists to assist the workers in organizing a strike and structuring their protest.
