In 1949 Hong Kong, an affair between Carolyn, a married American, and Paul, a French shipping executive, is revealed. Carolyn's husband, Walter, a British doctor, confronts her and demands an ultimatum: end the affair or move to rural May Tan Fu on the Chinese mainland where he plans to help combat a cholera outbreak. Despite her reluctance, Carolyn agrees to leave her luxurious life behind and move to the remote area. There, they meet Tim, a kind-hearted acquaintance of Paul's, and Carolyn gains a new perspective on her marriage and herself. However, it may be too late to salvage their relationship due to Walter's disdain for her infidelity.
