In 1986, a Brooklyn family of pseudo-intellectuals, comprising a professor and a prominent writer, splits apart. The professor is a selfish, cheap, and jealous writer who dismisses those who don't read or watch movies, while his unfaithful wife is growing as a writer and has no issue with "philistines." Their sons, Walt and Frank, take sides and are affected by abnormal behaviors.
