Martin Bishop, left penniless after his father's death, takes a job as a timekeeper on a remote construction crew at Great Slave Lake Railroad. He soon discovers rampant corruption led by the sadistic foreman Fisk, who orders him to inflate hours worked and keep banned workers on payroll to pocket their wages. Martin decides to do what's right by going against Fisk, mobilizing the banished workers, known as the "garbage eaters," who survive by scavenging food from the camp's dump.
