In 1950s Los Angeles, a car dealer named Richard Hudson opens a used-car dealership but soon becomes disenchanted and turns it over to an assistant to pursue his passion for filmmaking. He writes a movie about a truck driver who loses control, kills a child, and dies defending himself against police. Richard enlists the help of his father-in-law, a former film director, and pitches the idea to the CEO of Mammoth Pictures, who agrees to fund the project. However, creative differences arise between Richard and the CEO, leading to conflict.
