Miguel Cervantes, son of a country doctor, defies his social background to become private secretary to Cardinal Acquaviva, the papal envoy to King Philip II of Spain. He quits after realizing his friendship with the Ottoman general was used to delay a disastrous crusade. Miguel then joins the Holy League's fleet, becomes a hero, but receives no reward and is captured by pirates, sold into slavery. He and his brother plan a daring slave revolt instead of waiting for ransom.
