A drifter, Jack McCloud, breaks his leg in a car accident and is taken in by a kind-hearted woman, Jane Holman, who invites him to stay at her home until he recovers. As Jack heals, he forms strong bonds with Jane's sons, teaching baseball to one and earning their love and acceptance. However, the youngest son, Gunny, is suspicious of Jack and his mysterious past, leading to a quest to uncover the truth about the stranger and his loyal dog, Betty Jane.
