A shipwreck separates identical twins Viola and Sebastian, who both assume the other is dead. Viola disguises herself as her brother and becomes a trusted friend to Count Orsino, who is pining for Lady Olivia. Olivia, in mourning for her brother, falls for the disguised Viola, now called Cesario.
