Twelve-year-old Marcus Brewer, a socially awkward boy, lives with his chronically depressed mother. He constantly tries to make her happy, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. Meanwhile, thirty-eight-year-old Will Freeman is a slacker who has never had to work a day in his life due to his father's royalties. He has a habit of dating single mothers to satisfy his selfish needs. When Will meets Marcus through his friend Suzie, who is friends with the Brewers, Marcus tries to infiltrate Will's life in an attempt to get him to date his mother. As Will gets to know Marcus, he realizes that the boy is more than just a nuisance and needs guidance navigating adolescence and dealing with his suicidal mother.
