Alvarez Kelly, a suave former Texan cattleman living in Mexico, sees the Civil War as an opportunity to make a profit. However, after a long journey to deliver cattle to the Union, he's kidnapped by Confederate Colonel Tom Rossiter. With the Union army surrounding Richmond and its people starving, the Colonel plans to coerce Kelly into helping him steal the herd and bring it into town. As Confederate money loses its appeal, the Colonel resorts to other means, leading to unexpected outcomes.
