In this psychological gangster film based on true events, Ma Barker leads her family gang, consisting of her sons, on a crime spree during the Depression era. The family's members exhibit various perversions, including the disturbing relationship between Ma and her son Herman. When Fred Barker is released from prison, he brings home his cellmate and lover, Kevin Dirkman, who also becomes involved with Ma. The story also follows Lloyd Barker, a drug-addicted son, and Arthur Barker, the family's wallflower son. Ma kidnaps a wealthy man and holds him for ransom, leading to a violent and visually stunning finale set in the Ozarks.
