On the day of his daughter's birthday, William "D-Fens" Foster, a desperate father, sets out to see his estranged daughter, but his efforts are thwarted by a series of frustrating events. After a breakdown, he begins a violent rampage, targeting those he perceives as responsible for his misfortunes. As chaos ensues, a determined detective, Sergeant Martin Prendergast, is hot on D-Fens' trail, convinced that the same man is behind a string of crimes.
