In early 20th century Sicily, a poor farmer and widower, Salvatore, decides to emigrate to the US with his family, including his elderly mother. Before departing, they meet Lucy, a supposed British lady seeking to return to the States. Lucy, who becomes known as Luce, unexpectedly wants to marry someone before arriving at Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore agrees, and the couple joins his family on the journey. Upon arrival, they spend the quarantine period trying to pass examinations to gain entry to the US, facing challenges as poor farmers from Sicily.
