Hotel Rwanda background

Hotel Rwanda

Paul Rusesabagina, a courageous hotel manager, becomes a symbol of hope in the midst of Rwanda's chaos by protecting over a thousand Tutsi refugees from the brutal Hutu militia.

In 1994, Rwanda's ethnic divisions, artificially created by Belgian colonizers, have become deeply ingrained in the population. Despite the Tutsis being favored by the Belgians, the Hutus hold power after independence. Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu married to a Tutsi, is the manager of the Hotel Des Milles Collines in Kigali, catering to wealthy Westerners. When tensions between the Tutsi guerrillas and Hutu militia escalate, Paul's optimism that the UN peacekeeping forces will protect the innocent is shattered as the Western world evacuates, leaving the native population vulnerable. Paul, who has saved his family and brought them to the hotel, must use his skills to keep everyone alive, regardless of their ethnicity.
