Ex-cons Perry Smith and Dick Hickock plan a robbery in Kansas, intending to steal $10,000 from the Clutter family and flee to Mexico. The duo, comprising a manipulative Dick and a sensitive but violent Perry, carry out the heist, but it goes awry, resulting in the brutal murder of all four Clutters. As the investigation unfolds, Detective Alvin Dewey and his team work to identify and capture the pair, who may ultimately confess to their crimes.
