In the British-controlled Bahamas during World War II, Captain Ralph and his crew smuggle refugees, while American Thomas Mann, a former industrial artist, navigates his personal life with his close-knit group of friends, including Eddy, Lil, and Joseph. The story unfolds in three chapters: "The Boys", where Tom's three sons visit him for the summer; "The Woman", where Tom receives an unexpected visit from his ex-wife Audrey, revealing past and present aspects of their complicated relationship; and "The Journey", where Tom decides to sail back to the States, but his trip takes an unexpected turn due to the war and Eddy's actions.
